TOOLS FOR SUCCESS:

Accessing the General Curriculum

What is the General Curriculum?
In Massachusetts the general curriculum is based on learning standards known as Curriculum Frameworks. Curriculum Frameworks define specific student learning expectations at each grade level for all students. The general curriculum content areas now include frameworks in Preschool, Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science and Technology, History & Social Science, Health, Arts, and World Languages.

What is Access to the General Curriculum?
When students with disabilities have the opportunity to learn the same curriculum as their non-disabled peers, be involved in that curriculum and progress in that curriculum, they have access. The IEP is a tool to help the student with disabilities access, participate in and make progress in the general curriculum and life of the school.
