When a youth turns 18 they legally become an adult. As an adult there are some different responsibilities that youth will want to be aware of.

What to know now that a youth is 18?

1. Now that a youth is 18 they can vote and should feel free to participate in all state and local elections.

2.  As a male, 18-25, they are required to register with the Selective Service.

3.  Make sure youth have some form of identification if they do not have a driver’s license.

4. Learn more about decision making and whether guardianship or an alternative structure of supports is necessary.

5. A youth who has been receiving SSA disability benefits will need to notify SSA when they turn 18 and/or when they are no longer attending school to continue receiving benefits.
