COVID-19 Special Education Resources

Due to health concerns around COVID-19 in Massachusetts, school districts will be providing remote learning opportunities for all students during school closures.  Parents of students with special needs should contact their school district or special education administrator to ask about the special education services that will be provided to their student during this crisis.

School districts must provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to students with disabilities, yet ” … during this national emergency, schools may not be able to provide all services in the same manner they are typically provided.” (US DOE, March 21, 2020)

“… districts should make every effort to use creative strategies to provide special education instruction and services to the extent feasible. Moreover, any educational opportunities offered to the general student population, including enrichment activities and resources, must be made accessible to students with disabilities. ” (DESE, FAQ, March 26, 2020)

The Federation for Children with Special Needs has advocated for students to receive special education services  as required under IDEA and MA law during this time.
