      Transition (ages 14-22) Getting Ready for Adult Life: Supports, Services, and the IEP

      Description: This webinar will help to increase understanding of the transition planning process, including why transition planning is so important, services that could be included,

      who is eligible, and the student and parent roles in transition planning.

      Participants will learn how to prepare for a transition planning meeting, what to do as the age of majority approaches, possible adult services.  For children in DCF custody, we will discuss the role of the voluntary placement agreement with DCF and benefits for post-secondary education.

      Discipline and Suspension

      Description: Describes school responsibilities for discipline, range of consequences for rule violations, the difference between suspensions, expulsions, and emergency removals, procedures for out-of-school suspensions and expulsions, and legal protections for students on IEPs including the Manifestation Determination Review (MDR).  We will also discuss alternatives to suspensions such as PBIS and Restorative Justice approaches.

      Description: This webinar explains the differences between early intervention and special education, the transition planning conference, the special education procedures including referral, evaluation, the Team meeting, eligibility determination, services, goals, placement, response options, and parent’s procedural due process rights for resolving disputes.

      Understanding the developmental and educational impacts of early childhood trauma and film screening of Resilience

      Description: Children who have experienced complex trauma at young ages, including neglect and/or physical, psychological, or sexual abuse, may have changes in their brain development that lead to long-term consequences for learning and behavior. We will discuss these changes to the child’s developing brain, and common ways that a trauma history can manifest at school and in behavior. We will also discuss how resilience can be increased in children and adults who have experienced trauma. At this training, we will view the film Resilience, and discuss how to implement trauma-sensitive practices into the IEP.

      Note:  This training includes a film screening and is 2.5 hours long, with a break.
