PCTI Format and Structure
PCTIs are generally held once weekly for 8-weeks which previously included an optional ninth day for individuals wishing to complete the Federation’s Information Center internship (postponed due to the current COVID-19 pandemic). To ensure the health and safety of participants and presenters, our 2021 PCTIs will take place online and may be offered in the following remote options: synchronous (live), asynchronous (online learning modules), and hybrid (combination of asynchronous and synchronous).
Synchronous PCTI Option: Our synchronous PCTI option is very similar to previous in-person presentation meetings. Generally occurring on a the same day each week for 8-weeks (can include an optional 9th day), these include 2 – 3 workshop-style presentations led by Federation staff, attorneys, and experts in the field of special education, representatives from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Bureau of Special Education Appeals (BSEA), among others. In addition to class time, participants are expected to complete approximately 1.5 hours per week of additional coursework that will be made available on Canvas, an online learning platform. The virtual coursework will include videos, discussion boards, blogs, and other media that support and complement the course material.
Asynchronous PCTI Option: Our asynchronous PCTI option also generally takes place over 8-weeks and can include an optional 9th day. Unlike the synchronous option, workshop-style presentations are recorded weekly and made available on Canvas. Once uploaded to Canvas, presentation recordings AND weekly activities can be accessed 24-hours a day. Please note that weekly modules begin and end on specific days of the week and participants are expected to view presentation videos and complete module activities within the week they are assigned.
Hybrid PCTI Option: This is a combination of our synchronous and asynchronous PCTI options and generally takes place over 8-weeks and can also include an optional 9th day. Participants are expected to attend both live scheduled meetings (dates/times to be determined) as well as to complete assigned learning modules on Canvas (dates to be determined). Once uploaded, presentation recordings AND weekly activities can be accessed 24-hours a day. Once again, please note that modules begin and end on specific days of the week and that participants are expected to view presentation videos and complete module activities within the week they are assigned.
Optional Day 9 (Update 01/07/2021): The Federation is currently in the process of planning ways in which to offer the optional ninth day to participate in the Federation’s Information Center internship. We are diligently working to brainstorm new processes and procedures that support needs of families reaching out to the Federation as well as the health and safety needs of interns and mentors. We appreciate the interest and patience of those wishing to participate in the program and look forward to supporting internship options in the future.
NOTE: Please note that links to weekly meetings and course materials will be available through Canvas, an online learning platform. Please note that you must have access to a reliable internet connection to participate in any of our remote PCTI options. Click on this link to view a video created by the Notre Dame Office of Digital Learning to see examples of these three remote learning options. We also highly recommend that PCTI attendees have some familiarity with special education procedures (i.e., FCSN Basic Rights Series Workshops: Evaluation and Eligibility, Understanding the Individualized Education Program, Transition Planning (for ages 14-22). A list of free workshops presented by the Federation can be found by clicking on this link.
PCTI often fills quickly and Pre-Registration is required. We recommend registering early. Preference will be given to youth with disabilities and family members of children with special needs. Registration closes one business day prior to class or when the class roster is full. For waitlist information contact email@example.com.
