Range of Educational Placements

There are two main types of placements:

  • In-District Placements: classrooms that are part of the public school
  • Out-of-District Placements: private special education schools; these can be day or residential schools where children are referred by their public schools, and tuition is paid by the public schools

Before out-of-district or private schools are considered by a child’s team, various in-district, public school options are typically tried first. These options may range from full inclusion in general education classrooms, to fully separate day schools (stand-alone programs specifically designed for children with special needs). See the page from your child’s IEP that describes their current placement: “IEP Placement Consent Form” (PDF).
