Johanna Hammer: Special Education
Johanna Hammer received her degrees from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and Smith College School for Social Work. She spent nearly twenty years practicing clinical social work with children, adolescents and their families, and ten years working in the public school system, ultimately combining those skills in her current role as Belchertown’s Autism and Behavior Specialist. She is dedicated to supporting an affirming and diverse school culture. It is her mission to increase opportunities for inclusion at every level; recognizing the social and emotional benefits to all involved. In the wider community, Johanna works to connect students and families with community members and resources, developing customized programs to increase inclusion opportunities where students can socialize and learn from one another. When asked about her work, she is enthusiastic – Johanna reports that she learns something new every day from the children she works with, and she is thankful for the great team of families and professionals that help students with special needs realize their full potential. She “has the best job ever” and returns home to “an amazing family who keeps me loved and solidly grounded”.
