By getting involved, you can connect with others to build a better community.<\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Start Local<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Begin where you feel comfortable.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Our communities need champions at all levels, you can start where you feel comfortable.\u202f Share your story to help others in similar situations to feel seen, heard and understood.\u202f \u202fGet involved, your advocacy can inspire, enlighten, and create connections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You do not have to do this alone &#8211; invite people to start a support group with you!\u00a0 Often at meetings, parents are interested in sharing their personal stories, concerns, and feelings with other parents, especially about their experiences in trying to get the best possible services for their child. You can give other parents an avenue for their voice and to share concerns outside of a formal business meeting by establishing a Support Group. Parents attending these more informal support group meetings can share information, resources and provide direct support one-on-one. For a parent who feels uncomfortable at a public meeting, these small groups are the right fit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take some time to read about advocacy before you begin.\u202f \u202fMass NAELA (National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys) has published a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/massnaela.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/MassNAELA-Special-Needs-Toolkit-Second-Edition.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Special Needs Advocacy Toolkit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which talks about advocacy, effective types of communication and tips on how to become a great advocate (tips on page 7).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sharing Your Story<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One way to advocate is to share your personal story.\u202f Your story can be impactful and can provide inspiration and motivation to others. Stories help us connect and can establish mutual understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sharing your story is a personal decision and may be hard to do at first.\u202f Remember, your story has the potential to help someone else feel less alone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are many benefits to sharing your story to advocate for change, such as creating empathy, helping others understand, and motivating people to take action.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FCSN has a storytelling workshop which provides some background on sharing your story.\u202f You can review the Sharing Your Story workshop handout\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fcsn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Sharing-Your-Story-Story-Guide.docx\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TIP<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: New storytellers can share their story with a friend to get some feedback.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Community Organizing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Anyone can be an organizer &#8211; a person who arranges something (such as an event) by planning and coordinating the efforts of others. Organizers bring people together and make it easier for people to take action and succeed. Organizers help people see how they can work together and make an impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some fundamental principles of community work, such as distributing the tasks, empowering others to make decisions, and being organized, can help you be a better organizer.\u202f This\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/neighborhoodanarchists.org\/organizing-guide\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Community Organizing Guide<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0reviews some of these organizing principles and skills to practice. \u202f<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take a Leadership Role<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parents are needed to lead, and volunteering is a wonderful way to gain experience.\u202f Many local and state advisory boards require parent representatives in their board membership.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many state agencies are looking for parent representatives for their advisory boards.\u202f There is usually a process to be considered for a position and you may have to complete an application or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0write a letter of interest to the chair of an advisory board.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MA has over 700 boards and commissions dealing with every state department and public policy area.\u202f You can review a list of Massachusetts&#8217;s\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/boards.mass.gov\/search?seats=all\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Boards and Commissions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to see if one is a good fit for your interests,\u202fand can search specifically for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/boards.mass.gov\/search?policyarea=advisory-councils-and-working-groups&amp;seats=all\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advisory Boards and Working Groups<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"8\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our state Board of Education has 13\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doe.mass.edu\/bese\/councils\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advisory Councils<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which require parent representatives to serve as advisors<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"9\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many cities and towns have a local Disability Commission which promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of community life.\u202f These Commissions, established by town meeting or city council vote, may require family members and self-advocates to be members of the commission. You can review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/sample-operating-guidelines-and-goals-for-local-commissions-on-disability\/download\">Sample Operating Guidelines and Goals for Local Commissions on Disability<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"10\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Have you thought about running for election to a leadership position? Check\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nahb.org\/-\/media\/NAHB\/advocacy\/docs\/state-and-local\/guide-to-seeking-local-elected-office.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">out this Guide to seeking local elected office.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TIP<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: Volunteering is a fantastic way to get connected to a cause or group.\u202f \u202fYour local community may have some volunteer opportunities to build your leadership skills, for example the PTO, SEPAC, or ELPAC.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Written Advocacy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even if you do not have time to serve on a group or council, you can contribute your voice and experience to influence decision-makers by sharing your thoughts and ideas in written format.\u202f This method of &#8220;written advocacy&#8221; may take some time and practice.\u202f You will also need to experiment with different platforms to share opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"11\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let your elected officials know what is working or what is NOT working in your community.\u202f They need to hear from you!\u202f This\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Search\/FindMyLegislator\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">website<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to help you find your state legislator in MA.\u202f You just need to enter your street address, city\/town, and zip code to search.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"12\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some newspapers publish opinion letters to the editor which appear as Op-Ed articles in the publications.\u202f An Op-Ed is a short article expressing an opinion or viewpoint on a topic.\u202f Share your opinion to reach people, change hearts and minds and maybe even reshape policy.\u202f Duke University has a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/communicators.duke.edu\/writing-media\/writing-effective-op-eds\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">website<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with tips on how to write effective Op-Eds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"13\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Offer to write an article on a topic of interest for an organization that aligns with your interests.\u202f Showcase your thought leadership and earn valuable exposure. maybe even make some new connections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"14\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maybe starting a blog is the right tool for your written advocacy.\u202f A blog is a website that provides insight into a certain topic and can be a forum to share ideas, information, and updates.\u202f <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once you have found your niche, be original, interesting, and honest!<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"15\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Facebook is also an option for written advocacy.\u202f Anyone with a Facebook account can\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/104002523024878?helpref=about_content\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Create a Facebook Page<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, build content around your advocacy topic and ask friends to share in their networks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">TIP<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: A short, clear statement may have the most impact to communicate your message.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building your Background<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You may need to build your knowledge in a content area to increase your advocacy.\u202f Rules and regulations often change, and you need to keep up to date on policies and procedures to be an effective advocate.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"16\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Apply to participate in a leadership development program, such as FCSN&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/fcsn.org\/changemakers\">Barbara Popper Leadership Institute<\/a>. Or recruit a team of parent leaders, community members, and school distirct decision-makers and then apply for our <a href=\"https:\/\/fcsn.org\/apple\/\">A.P.P.L.E. Institute!<\/a><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"16\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you are interested in learning more about the special education system in MA, check out FCSN&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fcsn.org\/pti\/parent-consultant-training\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parent Consultant Training Institute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The Parent Consultant Training Institute (PCTI) is an intensive training program (40-54 hours of instruction over 8 weeks) designed to provide families and professionals with a solid foundation in special education laws and procedures.\u202f This course is open to people with all levels of experience and is a great starting place for those interested in bringing their advocacy to a higher level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"17\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Join an online group that discusses a topic you are interested in, for example over 3,000 parents and professionals are talking about post-secondary transition and sharing resources on the Facebook group,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/266094440846756\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Massachusetts Transition to Adulthood<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"18\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Make new connections by attending workshops and conferences<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"19\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Review state agency websites to get a background on their focus and who is in leadership positions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Empowered parents are uniquely motivated to create positive change and build a better community for their children and others.
