We offer live and interactive learning opportunities for families, young people, educators, and other professionals. These sessions are offered September-June on our Events Calendar and are free to attend. Sessions range from 1-2 hour workshops to multi-session trainings. Workshops and Multi-Session Trainings

Basic Rights: Evaluation & Eligibility

Description: A comprehensive overview of special education laws and procedures. Covers the special education process, including referrals, evaluations, eligibility, services, placement, and parents’ rights in dispute resolution.

Basic Rights: Understanding the IEP

Description: Provides information about why the Individualized Education Program (IEP) is important, how it is developed, and the different sections of the document. Further discussion will focus on what types of services are included and measurable goals.

Basic Rights: Transition Planning

Description: Overview of the transition planning process for students aged 14-22. We’ll discuss the legal right to transition services, why transition planning is important, what it looks like in the IEP, and the roles of students and parents.

Bullying: What Parents Need to Know

Description: Addresses what bullying is, the school’s legal obligation to prevent and address bullying, some strategies and tools for dealing with bullying, and how to address bullying in the IEP.

Suspension and Discipline

Description: Discusses school discipline, including the types of rule violations, the rights of students and parents, types of suspensions, alternatives to suspension, and the legal protections for students on IEPs.

Effective Communication

Description: Learn about how to effectively communicate with schools, including why it’s important, strategies for success, methods for establishing communication, and parents’ procedural rights for resolving disputes.

Social Emotional Learning

Description: Provides an introduction to social emotional learning. We will dive into what social emotional learning is, why it is important, and how it is applied in the classroom and the IEP.

Turning 3 Essentials

Description: Outlines the differences between early intervention and special education, the transition planning conference, and special education procedures.

504 Plans

Description: Explains the rights and responsibilities of a 504 Plan, who is eligible, what it contains, and the major differences between a 504 Plan and an IEP.

Parent Consultant Training Institute (PCTI)

The Parent Consultant Training Institute (PCTI) provides intensive advocacy training on special education laws and procedures. Participants learn from experts in the field, network with each other, and become part of a community dedicated to supporting children in special education.  Visit our PCTI page for more information
