Vivian’s journey into the realm of Special Education began with a deeply personal catalyst: her son’s needs. Faced with the challenges of navigating services and support systems, she found herself thrust into advocacy out of necessity. Prior to joining the Federation for Children with Special Needs (FCSN), Vivian struggled to locate adequate services for her son in Western Massachusetts. It was a journey fraught with obstacles, yet transformative in its impact.
In 2019, Vivian enrolled in the Parent Consultant Training Institute (PCTI), a pivotal step that empowered her with knowledge and skills to navigate the complex landscape of special education. Inspired by her newfound expertise, she began volunteering, driven by a mission to ensure that no parent would endure the same challenges she faced. Her dedication to helping others is fueled by her belief that informed parents can significantly influence their children’s educational outcomes.
At FCSN, Vivian plays a crucial role in guiding parents through the maze of special education services. Her own experience has made her acutely aware of the critical importance of early intervention and appropriate educational support. She often reflects on her journey, sharing with callers, “If I had known then what I know now, my son’s outcome would have been different.”
Beyond her work at FCSN, Vivian nurtures a non-professional parent group for families of children diagnosed with autism. These monthly gatherings provide a safe space for parents to share experiences and insights, fostering a community of mutual support and learning. Her commitment extends to empowering parents with knowledge about their children’s disabilities, equipping them with the tools they need to advocate effectively.
Vivian resides in Western Massachusetts, where she continues to advocate passionately for children with special needs and their families. Her personal journey has not only shaped her professional path but also ignited a fervent dedication to ensuring that every child receives the support they deserve.
