Pandemic-Related Transition Services:
Department of Developmental Services
The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder to become fully engaged members of their community. DDS Family Support Centers are offering a new Transition Project for young adults who:
- turned 22 between Mar 10, 2020 and Sep 30, 2023
- attended school until their 22nd birthday
- are DDS eligible
Through this project, qualifying young adults can take part in group activities that fit their interests. Groups take place in the evenings and on weekends. You can join a group or find out about starting a new one focused on what you like doing! Examples of current groups:
- Cheerleading
- Casino Trips
- Videogaming
- Movie Groups
- Whale Watches
- Beach Trips
- Cornhole Tournament
- Museum and Zoo Trips
- Cooking (and Eating) Groups
Not all groups are offered by all centers – reach out to the Federation to connect with your local Support Center and learn what’s available in your area.
Contact the Federation for help understanding your options.

What People are Saying about DESE Pandemic-Related Transition Services
The mini golf group was a success. The individuals there were able to explore new skills. K has never been mini golfing and took a great liking to it almost immediately. We quickly learnt that she was a natural pro and even hit a hole in one! Two of the other individuals were able to work on socializing with others in their community and even step out of their physical and mental comfort zones to fully enjoy the activity.
J and M are young men who became great friends in the DESE Transition Project groups. J joined the flag football team, and both started a podcast group and are making a movie! Those were some of their shared interests they had and the DTP has facilitated those groups and now others are joining in.
